Internationally acclaimed local house music trio Mi Casa took time out of their busy schedules on Friday to make a stop at the Cancer Association of South Africa’s 10th Shavathon, where they shaved and colour-sprayed patrons’ heads at Woolworths Financial Services in Observatory.
Referred to as J’Something, group vocalist Joao Fonsesca said that losing a few close friends prompted him to raise awareness about the disease. One of his friends was Brett Jackson, a popular club DJ who died of cancer two years ago.
“I’ve lost many close people to cancer, one of them being Brett,” he told Weekend Argus. “It’s always a painful loss, losing someone to cancer.”
J’Something continued: “It’s great to be a part of this initiative. We’ve been involved since the beginning, but we’ve now decided to take our involvement a step further.”
He is a Cansa Shavathon ambassador.
“Now that I’m official, I think it’s important that we be more involved to show that we can make a difference just by giving time to cancer patients and those affected,” he said.
Mi Casa donated the use of their hit single These Streets for use during the Shavathon by radio stations in the country.
The Shavathon sees South Africans, from celebrities to ordinary members of the public, shave or colour-spray their heads in support of Cansa’s awareness programme.
Mi Casa, which also includes DJ Duda and trumpeter Mo-T, have been crisscrossing cities across South Africa for the past two weeks to help raise cancer awareness.
Explaining their objective, Cansa Relay 4 Life chairwoman Wadiah Salie said they were fighting back against the disease through education.
“Through the Shavathon, we’re raising funds for Cansa to carry out research and strengthen its fight against cancer,” she said.
Yesterday radio personalities Lala Nongalaza, Liezel van Westhuizen and Tamsyn Lee Brown were at the V&A Waterfront’s Amphitheatre to lend their support. - Sunday Argus
