The one thing many of us complain about regarding IdolsSA is that we rarely see the winners do anything profound once the show is over.

Which is why it is refreshing to have Musa Sukwene, 2013’s winner, perform a Valentine’s show on Friday. To be held at the Market Theatre in Joburg, the show will see the crooner do what he does best and remind us why he was South Africa’s choice on the reality show.

“It’s the night of love so we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day. Everyone who knows me knows how I love R&B so we are looking at doing songs from my album and a number of covers. These might include material from Ringo to Johnny Gill,” said the singer.

He already has something in mind when it comes to who should attend the show.

“I am expecting my mature ladies who believe in love. It’s essentially for everyone who has someone they love and let’s all have a good time. My album has a lot of material which is basically in line with what I am trying to do, so it is going to be a blast.”

While it will be great to hear him do his thing as a solo act, Sukwene revealed that he has intentions of bringing some other talent onto the stage.

“I have a couple of friends who will be joining me on the stage and I can only confirm who they are on the night,” he said.

Outside of the show on Friday, the singer is also excited about being one of the nominees for the upcoming Metro FM Music Awards which will be held on February 28 in Durban. Sukwene was selected in the Best New Artist category.

“I am actually excited about the nomination because it was really unexpected. In my mind I have already gone past the ‘do I win or do I not win this?’ thing. I am just grateful that I am part of the nominees, especially this year when the theme is ‘celebrating greatness’. I am just happy to be part of that package,” he said.

He finds himself competing against the likes of Dr Malinga and Dimplez so the category is going to be a tough one to crack.

“The category is quite a tough one, but I, at this point in time, am focused on just attending the awards and having a good time,” he said.

When the show and the awards are over, Sukwene will look at doing a regional tour to promote his brand.

“We are actually putting up a tour schedule for my album because for now I have been busy with corporate gigs. So after the Valentine’s event we want to blow it big. The most important part is spreading the music, even to our neighbouring countries,” he said.

After shooting the first video off his debut album, as part of his winning IdolsSA, Sukwene feels it’s time to try another one and the first track on his CD, Angsakwazi, is going to be the one they will go with.

“My main focus is to push the music, but I continue to go into the studio to record new material. We are also working on a video for one of my tracks which is supposed to come out pretty soon,” he explained.

A product of IdolsSA, Sukwene is happy that the new season has begun and is hoping to watch it as much as possible.

“I am excited that someone else’s dream is about to come true and for me that’s what the main focus is. A new season means a bunch of artists will become one family for a whole year doing what they love and I think that’s really special. I am excited to see what’s going to happen. Last year I was watching and thought Bongi would take it. That’s why I am working with her right now,” he said.

• The show at The Market Theatre starts at 7pm. Tickets: from R56 (for students) to R176 available through Computicket
