In 1994, the very first Oppikoppi took place. You now know it as the institution that has become top of mind when one thinks of South African music festivals. But on 21 May 1994, the orgnanisers had no idea that they would be here 24 years later.

This morning, the official Oppikoppi Twitter account explained just how that day went down. They tweeted: “On 21 May 1994, in a bar, not a barn, our little festival was born. Join us in celebrating #21MayIsOppiKoppiDay and share your stories, pics, faces!”

How many times have you been to Oppi? Is it still on your bucketlist? Well, don’t fret if you’ve never been - you have another chance this year.

Back to its regular August dates (after trying to change the dates last year), this year’s Oppikoppi will take place in Limpopo from August 9 to 11.

The theme is Nomakanjani and you can catch the likes of Bongeziwe Mabandla, CrashCarBurn, Fokofpolisiekar, Sho Madjozi and Wonderboom on stage.
