Four rising young composers will see their work brought to life by professional musicians during the finals of the 2018 SAMRO Overseas Scholarships competition. The finals will be held on August 18 at the Linder Auditorium.
This year, Riley Giandhari and Andrew Hoole, who are both jazz finalists, and Conrad Asman and Lise Morrison, who are Western Art Music finalists, will compete. The value of the main award in each genre, jazz and Western Arts Music is R200 000 and will see each winner go overseas and pursue postgraduate music studies or professional development.
André le Roux, who is the managing director of the SAMRO Foundation, said: “We are beyond excited to welcome these four up-and-coming music creators to our growing SAMRO family. This year, the application process was online and our esteemed panel of adjudicators also completed their evaluations online. This move to digital has made the entire process far more streamlined and convenient for all concerned.”
The scholarship, which also caters to singers, instrumentalists and keyboard players in other years, has been awarded to the likes of Linda Skhakhane and Zoe Modiga in previous years. Who will walk away with it this year?
