A very serious debate is going on about the renaming of the Cape Town International Airport.

South Africans have been asked to weigh in on who they believe the airport should be named after. So far, opinions on social media indicate that the majority choice is between Winnie Madikizela Mandela and Krotoa.

Someone attempted to suggest Nelson Mandela as if there are very few things in the country that bear his name. I digress. The serious conversation is one that is necessary but that doesn’t mean we can’t throw out a few names too. Whether they will be considered or not is secondary.

How about the Hugh Masekela International Airport? Would we be blowing our own horn with that one? How about if it was named after Miriam Makeba? Or Dr Philip Tabane? Or Thandi Klaasen? Or Mandoza? Or Mgarimbe? No? I suppose the name should be of a late artist. And besides, it’s enough that he already gave us our national anthem.

Which musician deserves to have their name written on the building that is currently known as the Cape Town International Airport? Tell us @IOL_Lifestyle on Twitter.
