The month of May is widely known as Africa Month. Celebrations all over the world usually take place to commemorate the excellence of the continent. On May 28, music lovers can celebrate Africa Day in Joburg’s Newtown district.

Because the Organisation of African Unity – which is now known as the African Union – was established in May 25, 1963, Africa Day is used as a way to mark its significance. It’s also a way to put the continent’s musical heritage on stage.

The Africa Day celebrations will be held at the popular music venue, Bassline. This is the 12th year that Bassline will play host. The concert will be broadcast live on SABC2 on the night. Other sponsors associated with this event include the National Lottery Commission, Kaya FM and the Department of Arts and Culture.

The concert will see a star-studded line-up of varying genres take to the stage. Most of the artists who will be on stage are women and this is no coincidence. As Kaya FM MD, Greg Maloka, said: “For her to thrive once again, Africa needs her women to stand firm as women, and her song to keep playing for her children to sing along. Kaya FM is pleased to be associated with the Africa Day celebrations showcasing the continent’s rich and diverse talent.”

The talent includes South African songbird, Zonke, who is one of the ladies leading the nominations at this year’s South African Music Awards. Waje, who is one of Nigeria’s biggest artists, is also one to watch at this concert. In addition to being a musician, Waje is a humanitarian who has African issues at the core of what she does.

You can also expect to see South African soul singer, Maleh, as well as Maya Kamati from Reunion Island, who only sings in French. Tribute Birdie Mboweni is another lady of the mic who is sure not to disappoint.

Other highlights will surely be the legendary Oliver Mtukudzi, Hagar Samir, Vaudou Game, Nakhane Toure, Songhoy Blues and more.

If you cannot be in Joburg for this music extravaganza, catch all the action live on TV.
