New crime series ‘The Detail’, features an all-female lead cast who star as detectives who solve homicide cases for the metropolitan police in Toronto, Canada, while dealing with their own personal issues.
Detective Stevie Hall (played by Angela Griffin) is a sharp, quick-witted interrogator – even while balancing the demands of work and her complicated family life – who mentors street smart Detective Jacqueline ‘Jack’ Cooper (played by Shenae Grimes-Beech).
Jack is a street smart Detective, with keen investigative skills, but a messy personal life. Joining them is Staff Inspector Fiona Currie (played Wendy Crewson), the homicide unit’s formidable boss, who works overtime to secure justice, no matter what the cost.
At the South African premier of the drama series, held last night at The Saxon, actress Wendy Crewson was in attendance for the event, which was hosted by radio presenter Azania Mosaka.
A seasoned actress, Wendy Crewson has starred on various films and television series, with her breakout acting role being in the 1991 film ‘The Doctor’.
Crewson is also known for playing various supporting and lead roles alongside actors such as Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, and Helen Mirren, and making appearances in shows like ‘24’ and ‘Revenge’.
“This has been the most remarkable experience because I feel when we started it and we were developing it and casting it, I really feel like the me too movement hadn’t entered the spotlight and so I really feel that this show is special”, Crewson said. Crewson added that majority of the cast and crew from ‘The Detail’ were predominantly female, which was something they ensured to have, not just for funding from the government (as Canada has laws for gender equality in the work space in order to receive government financial support), but also to add a more realistic approach to the series if the lead are women.
Crewson’s character Staff Inspector Fiona Currie is a straight-forward, fearless leader of the para-military organisation, who tries not to blur the lines between her colleagues personal lives and their professional lives, one which Staff Inspector Fiona Currie has learned to perfect in her years in law enforcement.
“I’ve done years of playing the wife and mother and to be the empathetic character, but to be the fearless leader, I love that she is a woman in a para-military organisation that fought her way to the top, because she learned that you don’t have to be stronger than the men just smarter than the men”, she said.
This was the first time that Crewson had been cast alongside Shenae Grimes-Beech (known for 90210 and Degrassi) and Angela Griffin (known for Britain’s Coronation Street and Holby City), and yet she said that the three of them had never created such easy chemistry during their casting and the taping of their scenes.
“We became the best of friends immediately upon meeting. Our chemistry is just fantastic”.
Crewson further told me that to have the three of them cast as the main leads was something special and phenomenal. “I mean you have three diverse, inter-generational women as the leads, and I mean when do you ever see that? When do you see women my age on screen? I mean there are a few, like the lovely Helen Mirren, but you don’t see it. So the idea of this show, I feel so privileged to be a part of this show, and this movement”.
‘The Detail’ airs every Tuesdays at 8pm on Universal TV, DSTV channel 117.
