CASTLE (Season 5)

***

Finally building their Castle together.

Over the first four seasons, fans have grown rather impatient with renowned crime novelist Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) for not giving into their feelings. All that tension and chemistry was becoming unbearable.

Fortunately, the writers had the foresight to realise that they could milk it for only so long before viewers would grow weary and switch off.

And the fledgling romance between Richard and Kate certainly sent the storyline trajectory into a different dimension, as they battled with “couple issues”.

For starters, they have to keep their romance under wraps – especially from the captain. But all their cloak and dagger shenanigans catches up with them.

However, it comes with an entertaining fringe benefit as it provided much comic relief for viewers.

Season five kicks off with a few changes – Captain Victoria “Iron” Gates takes over from Captain Montgomery.

Kate, still recovering from her gun- shot wounds and in denial of any post-traumatic stress disorder, tries to conceal her knowledge of Castle’s declaration of his love for her in Season four’s climax.

However, as they find themselves embroiled in a series of murder investigations that vary from the death of an ex-con, a murder at a cryogenic laboratory and the killing of a ghost hunter, as well as an Atlantic City casino owner – they end up giving in to their feelings.

The major storylines this season include a throwback to the 1940s episode, and Kate trying to clear Castle’s name when he is framed for a ritualistic killing.

Laced with a healthy dose of humour amid the tension of nailing their perp, Castle makes for engaging viewing.

And now, watching Castle and Beckett getting caught in the act, so to speak, is incentive enough for fans.
