First the unexpected cervic close-up, then the Orgasmatron

A close-up of a cervix is not what you'd expect to see on the telly on a Sunday night, but there it was in living, breathing colour.

It was a little disconcerting, so I went back to Late Night With Conan O'Brien on CNBC (Sundays, 9.45pm) who was interviewing Queen Latifah, via a few seconds with the Girls Of The Playboy Mansion (E! Entertainment, Sunday double bill from 9.30pm).

It was about all I could handle of Holly, Kendra and whoever the other one is, with their fake blonde hair and fake boobs.

But eventually, after Conan had finished with The Simpsons creator Matt Groening - who named Homer after his dad, and his son after Homer, poor kid - I ended up back on Discovery for the tail end of The Orgasmatron.

The programme was about a doctor who had invented a device that would help women to achieve orgasm.

Apparently a trip to Adult World is not the solution for everyone. There are millions of women who never feel the earth move for serious medical reasons, and not just because their boyfriends couldn't be bothered to stop to ask for directions.

Three of them took part in the experiment, which involved an electrode being placed in the spine.

The precise positioning followed by an electronic pulse would then produce the desired result, virtually on demand, via a handheld device.

That was the theory, anyway.

The first woman was found to have a blockage in that part of her spine, which prevented the correct placement of the electrode, and tragically, there was no hope for her.

Woman number two was the winner and went on to have a fabulous couple of days (or hours, it wasn't exactly clear) with her husband, emerging flushed and grinning from ear to ear.

It might be worth adding that these were all rather elderly people, and definitely not of the porn star variety. They fell into the same category of picturing your parents having sex. It's not an image you want to live with, but I was very happy for her nonetheless.

The third woman had moderate success, but what got me was that at the end of the experiment, they took the electrodes out of all of them - even the one on whom it had been a resounding success. I thought that was rather cruel.

She remained upbeat, saying that at least she had had the experience. All the husbands look dutiful and supportive, and slightly panicked. And so they should. At least one of them has a lot to live up to.

Friday

Criminal Minds (ActionX, 8pm): Bob has his eye surgery, hoping he won't go completely blind in the process. Carlos and David are called to a port in Nova Scotia where a ship's crew is missing except the captain, who doesn't remember the past two weeks.

Nip/Tuck (SABC3, 10.15pm): Christian Troy lends his name to this episode, in which an unfortunate sexual incident causes him to break his perfect nose.

He's reluctant to let Sean perform the surgery to correct it, so he consults a rival surgeon. When Gina tells Christian he looks terrible, he decides to operate on himself. It's not for the faint-hearted.

Saturday

Smallville (SABC2, 6.30pm): Clark inadvertently reveals his powers to Alicia, a new girl at Smallville High, but is then amazed to discover she has a few interesting powers of her own. The shared secret leads to a special bond between the two.

Sunday

Everwood (M-Net, 5pm and 6pm): Racing through the remaining episodes now to make way for Idols, fans can look forward to a double bill of Everwood.

In the first episode of the evening Andy's long-lost father pitches up after 15 years. Ephram and Amy try to cheer Bright up and take him out to celebrate his 21st but it ends badly when Bright gets drunk, falls through a window and ends up in hospital. That will truly ruin anyone's evening.

In the second episode, Hannah and Bright reach an interesting conclusion which will affect their relationship.

Mission Implausible (Discovery, 9pm): It's the age-old battle of the sexes but this time it could be fatal. In the first episode Australian stunt woman Tania Zaetta and her all-female stunt and engineering crew will compete against an all-male stunt team led by British racing driver Jason Plato.

The teams risk their lives for a thrill that lasts for no more than five seconds to see who comes out best.

Each show will comprise three stunts and the physics of all the stunts will be revealed to see how this crazy bunch tests the rules of nature. Among the stunts will be travelling at the fastest speed in a rocket-powered skateboard and riding a dirt bike across a lake.

Life for a model is challenging - they are given 10 minutes to get ready for an industry party while in a moving limousine. Then, horror of horrors, they are required to pose without make-up!
