The nominees for the 12th annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) nominees were announced on Friday morning. The event, hosted by local media personality, Masechaba Ndlovu, was held at the  Inanda Country Club in Johannesburg.

The 12th annual awards ceremony will see 79 accolades handed out in the various categories, covering everything from TV shows to student films.

The National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa (NFVF) CEO and Saftas chairperson, Zama Mkosi said they were proud of the record number of 262 judges used in the two judging phases.

However, not all of South Africa's local shows are in the running. Popular soapies Generations: The Legacy and Muvhango will once again be snubbing the SAFTAs this year.

Speaking to Sowetan, Generations: The Legacy PR manager, Gaaratwe Mokhethi, confirmed that the popular SABC 1 soap has not submitted entries in any of the categories for this year’s SAFTAs.

“We have been entering the SAFTAS since the inception of Generations: The Legacy in 2014, hoping our talent will be recognized but unfortunately our cast hasn’t received such recognition from the SAFTAS,” Mokhethi explained.

A special event will be held on 9 March in Sun City next month to celebrate in the nominees, followed by the three-day awards ceremony from 22 to 24 March.
