Last year, it was announced that Oprah had asked revered writer and producer, Mara Brock Akil and her director and producer husband, Salim Akil, to bring their company Akil Productions to her network, OWN. This year, they have come out with the best series since Queen Sugar.

Love Is is mostly based on the love between this husband and wife duo. It looks at how they met, how they seemed totally compatible on a deeper level than his pocket would allow and even how they fought to stay together. It is also Mara’s directorial debut.

As if all of this was not enough to make anyone want to watch this series, the music takes it from a solid eight to a nine out of 10 kind of show. The first few episodes largely take place in the 1990s so there is some Janet Jackson and some Brandy, a little Dionne Farris and a whole lot more. As if the fashion and cars weren’t an epic throwback, the nostalgia brought on by the music is endearing.
