The biopic ’Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’, starring British actor Idris Elba, will be released in November.

The film is an adaptation of Mandela’s autobiography and caused a stir at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

“This is not Mommy’s Mandela,” Harvey Weinstein, co-chairperson of the Weinstein Company, told the Times. “You’re going to see stuff that’s pretty controversial.”

South African producer Anant Singh said he was pleased when Mandela looked at some of the images of Elba in the trademark Madiba shirt, and remarked, “Is that me?”

“This recognition and affirmation from Madiba is extremely satisfying and makes our journey worthwhile,” he said. - Sapa-AFP, Allison Decker and IOL
