Last week, well-known South African comedian Joey Rasdien got roasted on social media for his “blasphemous” joke at the Muslim Arts Festival, held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Saturday, July 22.

Shortly after, one audience member called for him to get off stage. And the backlash over his insult to Prophet Muhammad has been brutal.

This, despite Rasdien issuing an apology.

But he isn’t the first comedian to push the envelope and, in doing so, land in a spot of bother.

Although there is a lesson to be learnt

When he contacted for a comment he said: “A  comedian’s intention is never to offend. But sometimes, we do push the envelope too far. When this happens, it’s never done with malice... and we try to rectify it as soon as possible.”

What he said

“There is this other brah. This is going to be a bit controversial. I love Islam but there are certain things that make me wonder. That brah that wrote 40 000 hadiths in two years. there are 365 days in a year which makes it 740 days in two years,” he said at the festival.

“There’s 365 days in a year which makes it 740 days in two years which gives you 1 440 minutes per day, plus you must sleep. How can you write 40 000 hadiths in two years?”
