I COMPLETELY agree with Gareth Cliff’s comments that the singers sound different on TV than they do performing live at the Mosaïek Teatro. That said, I do think it will be difficult to chose a winner this year…especially when they all seem to be on the same mediocre footing.

And as the numbers whittle down with each Idols Results show, my disinterest and boredom soars to new heights.

But for die-hard fans (are there many left?), Shekhinah “Sheki” Donnell became last night’s victim, much to the relief of Monde Msutwana, 30, who was also in the bottom two.

Looks like Sheki’s “Showstopper” effort with Britney Spears’ ‘Till The World Ends’ failed to endear. At 17, one can’t fault her – she really needs a bit more experience under her belly.

Ironically, her performance curried favour with the judges who gave her kudos for having fun and running with it. Although, a fun performance doesn’t immediately translate into votes…and Sheki was in dire need of those.

At this stage of the competition, her only lifeline were the judges save. Alas, her off-key and pretty forgettable rendition of Lady Gaga’s edgy, ‘Marry The Night’, didn’t work in her favour – and bow out, she did.

Currently in its eight instalment, I can’t help but wonder if this cash cow for the channel would ever come close to being as tenuously entertaining as its American counterpart. Then again, with the US reality show wallowing in uncertainty with the debacles over its judging panel with Nicki Minaj and Nick Jonas throwing their oar in – maybe this horse has been flogged to death and should be laid to rest. Next…

Idols airs on Sunday at 5.30pm on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) and Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 107).
