We all know her for the smash-hit she did with Oskido, Tsamandebele, but with recent developments, Candy Mokwena (pictured) is now more than just a singer.

Known as the Kalawa diva, Mokwena recently announced that she would be taking up acting and her first role is on one of e.tv’s upcoming eKasi films, Tenderpreneurs.

“I have the best character,” said an ecstatic Mokwena.

“I play a new mayor who is given a municipality to run which is full of corruption. Her job is to change this state of affairs and serve the people in an honest manner,” she said.

The filming of Tenderpreneurs is under way and Mokwena couldn’t be any happier about diversifying from music into acting.

“I look at KB, who is younger than me, yet she is my role model. She does music and acting very well and I keep asking myself how she does it.

“Internationally, I look at Jennifer Lopez, who does everything from dancing, songwriting and motivational speaking to acting. If these ladies can do this, then I think I, too, can give it a try,” she said.

Although she has no strong acting background, Mokwena has been in front of the camera before.

“I was an actress once on this other show that I have already forgotten. They had me play a graduated woman and I now look back and feel that it meant I had really graduated in my life for new things to come my way. Here we are now and I have a new role in a film and only good things come from here on. I believe when God says ‘yes’, no one can say ‘no’,” she said.

As method actors would do, Mokwena studied her character before signing on and gave her various characteristics from her own persona and those of other people she knows.

“If you follow my performances then you’ll know that it is similar to my real life. I am a perfectionist. I make sure all my band members are wearing the right clothes, have good hairstyles and look presentable.

“My character is also clean and I am a clean person, so it is not hard to act it out. I also think of Thuli Madonsela’s role in the country and build my character around that, too. Like my character, Thuli is also one of the good guys, so it is fun to act that,” she said.

Tenderpreneurs is in production and expected to air late next month.
