It’s no secret that South Africa has significantly upped their TV game. A few years ago it was almost impossible for me to watch a single episode, leave alone follow an entire season of something local. But times have changed – and I am glad because my DSTV package doesn’t seem like a waste of my money anymore.

Currently one of the local shows that has me glued to the silver screen is 'iKhaya'. The Mzansi Magic’s drama series is a little over a month old now.

It stars Saint Seseli in the lead role as Eddie Sebatjane. Eddie lives a double life. We were first introduced to Eddie as a high flying yet down to earth business man who still mingles with his employees – he has a wife, Cebile (Nqobile Sipamla) and two children, Landani (Mbasa Msongelo) and Zenzi (Khomotso Manyaka). They live in Daveyton, Johannesburg and at first glance they look like they are a normal happy family, but we quickly get to see that each character comes with their own storyline and it’s slowly weaving up to be a pretty good one.

Later in the same episode, Eddie is driving his company (Mbata Logistics) truck to Limpopo. He changes his clothes, swaps his wedding ring and vehicle and heads to meet his second family in the rural village of Ga-Modjadji.

Eddie’s second family, is actually his first wife and daughter, Raisibe (Molobane Maja-Mbatha) and Mosima (Amanda Manku).

Turns out that Eddy left the farms of Limpopo for the city 18 years ago to earn money to pay for surgeries Mosima needed. She was born with a heart problem.

Both families have no idea of the game Eddie is playing.

What’s also interesting is that the show moves back and forth in time to put together the missing pieces of the puzzle.

Now fast-forward to this past week’s episode, Mosima, now a perfectly healthy 18 year old, is eager to go leave the farmstead and study in Johannesburg, her father insists that she should go to Turfloop University instead as he is afraid of being discovered. Being the stubborn and determined young lady she is, she packs her bags and runs away from home only to end up jumping out of a bus in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, Zenzi mistakenly walks in on her brother Landani and her crush getting frisky in Landani’s bedroom. She’s heartbroken to learn that Landani is gay and turns to drugs to take the pain away.

And to thicken the plot, is Cebile’s first husband Frank (Laki Khoza) who just found out about Eddie’s dirty little secret.

Tune in next week to find out what happens next.

iKhaya airs on Monday’s at 8pm on Mzansi Magic (DSTV Channel 161).
