In 2010 James Bhemgee made Cape Town proud as he sang his way through the SA’s Got Talent contest to bag the title, and other Capetonians aspire to emulate his win

this year.

Representing the Mother City in this year’s semi-finals are Latin dance team Cameron Lombard, 12, and Donlynn Fischer, 13, and the New Edition Gospel Band.

Cameron, who lives in Retreat, also made it to the 2009 semi-finals before being eliminated. His interest in ballroom and Latin American dancing began at the age of seven when he saw his sister, Courtney, take part in a competition.

“All of my friends… play soccer and cricket, but I am hoping if I win, it will make more people want to dance as well,” the youngster said.

He confided he dreamed of becoming a famous dancer and travelling the world, competing against the best in other countries. Partner Donlynn has a similar dream. The Grassy Park teen said she hoped to go to the UK and US to do what she loves.

They have been dancing together since the start of the year and, although Fischer admits dancing in front of a huge audience for SA’s Got Talent is a “big challenge”, she is confident they can handle the pressure.

“We have been… in a lot of competitions… in front of a lot of people. So we are both used to it now.”

The 18-member New Edition Gospel Band, which has been together for the past 12 years, also has high hopes.

The band want the title, not only for themselves, but for the Delft community they represent.

“The band is aiming to win the competition so they can create a free music academy in their community to unearth Cape Town’s raw musical talent,” band manager Pastor Trevor Trout said.

l SA’s Got Talent airs on Thursday night at 8.30pm on e.tv. - Sunday Argus
