I haven’t been to a New Year’s Eve party in three years and I plan on not going to one again this year. The TV has been my great companion the past three New Year’s Eves and I spend some time indoors with loved ones watching concerts, Dinner for One and SABC1’s annual countdown show, Come Duze. Here are the best TV shows to watch on New Year’s Eve.

Generations New Year’s Eve Special

The annual one-hour double-episode special of the soapie. There’s a party scene, drama and a storyline is wrapped up. SABC1 at 8pm

Jackie Evancho: Music of the Movies

America’s Got Talent star Jackie Evancho sings songs from popular movies, including Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Can You Feel The Love Tonight from The Lion King. SABC3 at 8pm

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert

A celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th anniversary as monarch.

The concert features performances from Paul McCartney, Elton John, Cliff Richard and Tom Jones as well as Grace Jones, Gary Barlow, Robbie Williams and Jessie J.

BBC Entertainment at 8pm

This Is It

The documentary about Michael Jackson’s rehearsal for what was going to be his comeback tour. The film was put together after his death.

Come Duze 2013

SABC1’s annual countdown to the new year featuring celebrities, musicians and actors sending their new year’s greetings mixed with local music videos.

The event is a review of the year in entertainment, with the emphasis on music.

In Come Duze various DJs play on the night and models and dancers help create a party atmosphere. SABC1 at 9.30pm

Parlotones: Dragonflies and Astronauts

Shot at The Teatro at Montecasino last year, The Parlotones’ Dragonflies and Astronauts concert was a world first because it was shot and transmitted worldwide in 3D. It’s a great blend of rock and theatre. Kahn Morbee and the boys will perform some of their biggest hits. SABC3 at 9.30pm

Rihanna: Good Girl Gone Bad

Rihanna’s concert for her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, was shot in Manchester, England, in 2008. Look forward to performances of her hit singles S.O.S, Umbrella, Break It Off and Unfaithful. e.tv at 10.10pm (See Highlights)

New Year’s Eve

A romantic comedy film set in New York on New Year’s Eve, this movie follows several people and how the day affects them.

Its stars many A-listers, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashton Kutcher, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry and Lea Michele. M-Net Movies Premiere at 10.20pm (See Highlights on Sunday)

The Royal Variety Performance 2012

The annual concert where top British acts and some invited international artists perform for Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh.

This year’s performers include One Direction, Alicia Keys, Kylie Minogue and Girls Aloud. M-Net at 10.30pm (See Highlights on Monday)

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2012

For those of you who didn’t catch the lingerie show earlier this month, tune in tonight as Victoria’s Secret Models Candice Swanepoel, Behati Prinsloo, Miranda Kerr, Liu Wen, Alessandra Ambrosio and Joan Smalls make dreams come true.
