NOT only is President Jacob Zuma #1, but his daughter Gugu Zuma-Ncube directs the number one TV show in the country – Uzalo.

The Zulu telenovela is produced and shot in KwaMashu, north of Durban, and boasts a total average viewership of 6.6 million viewers, about 500 000 more than its closest competitors – Generations and Skeem Saam.

The viewership figures were released on Monday by the TV South Africa Authority (TVSA) for the period July 13 to 19.

Uzalo has hung onto the top spot since it first eclipsed Generations in mid-June and has grown its viewership from a debut high of 4 million to 6.6 million viewers.

The show is based on the lives of two middle-class families who had their eldest sons switched at birth in the 90s.

It airs Mondays to Wednesdays on SABC 1 at 8.30pm.

Uzalo received a R5 million cash grant from the eThekwini Municipality two months ago after it had run into financial problems.

The production team of Uzalo did not reply to requests for comment over a number of days.

In a bid to reclaim the number one spot, The Times reported yesterday that Generations founder, Mfundi Vundla, was set to bring back villain character, Jack Mabaso.
