Johannesburg - Solange Knowles’ kung-fu attack on Jay-Z in an elevator has been the talking point of the week, with many speculating wildly as to why tempers were so frayed in the first place. One of the most baffling aspects captured in the video was the response of Jay-Z’s wife Beyonce, who appeared to watch on passively as her sister attacked the rap legend.
Now claims have emerged that, perhaps, Beyonce was on her sister’s side. According to insiders at the event, Solange flew off the handle because Jay-Z was getting “too close” to designer Rachel Roy at the Met Gala. They allege that Solange was upset that Roy appeared to be hovering around Jay-Z at the star-studded event and was standing up for her sister when she lashed out.
“Solange was defending Beyoncé in the elevator because Solange finds Jay’s friendship with Rachel to be WAY too close for comfort and it makes Solange very uncomfortable.”
Solange then approached Roy and warned her that “anyone who gets close to Jay has to be warned and deal with her as a sister,” a source told Us Weekly.
Roy, however, didn’t back down, and Beyonce was forced to intervene as the situation got heated.
Solange was, however, so incensed by the whole affair that she then went after Jay-Z in the now infamous elevator incident.
Adding more fuel to the fire is the fact that Roy is the ex-wife of Jay-Z’s former business partner Damon Dash. Their relationship soured when Jay-Z left the Roc-A-Fella label they had built up to become president of Def Jam Records. Jay-Z later bought Dash out of Roc-A-Fella Records, and the spin-off Roc-A-Fella clothing line.
Dash, who divorced Roy in 2008, seemed to take some joy in Solange’s assault.
Along with a picture of his daughter Ava posing with Solange at last month's Coachella festival, Dash wrote: “Forgot about this one @ava_dash @atrak and solange ...I am actually impressed with her independent spirit... She seems like a fighter #festivallife.”
Meanwhile, other sources seem convinced that the incident was a clear indication that Solange, who has reportedly battled an addiction to drugs in the past, is a troubled soul.
“She used to be on (Jay Z’s) label, but now she isn’t. And she moved to New Orleans from Brooklyn with her son. Solange still spends a lot of time in New York, but she is further away from her family, which has created some issues,” a source told PageSix.
“Clearly she was on something at the party, she was drunk and out of it. The girl is crazy and prone to outbursts. She got in the elevator with Jay and Bey. He had made a comment that she didn’t like, and she just snapped.” - Tonight Reporter
