Anime: Japanese for animation. Japan has a thriving industry for animation of all types, including movies with adult themes. While there are some styles - like the big-eyes look - that seen indicative of anime, there is such a variety in drawing styles that anime cannot be restricted to just one of its stylistic offshoots.

Bushi: Originally applied to soldiers in the service of a shogun, it's evolved into a term that applies to all professional warriors.

Bushido: The code of the warrior.

Chibi: Used to describe characters as small, little or young.

Eno: Ancient name of the city that became Tokyo.

Gaijin: Foreigner.

Hentai: While this word means transformation, in anime it means a form of perversion. There are many shockingly adult anime movies which are referred to as hentai.

Kappa: A monster that lives in rivers.

Kawaii: Cute. The characters in a child's anime series such as Sailor Moon could safely be referred to as kawaii.

Ki: Literally meaning air. Figurative meaning life-force energy. Familiar as the Chinese word 'chi'.

Manga: Refers to comic books, not animation.

Mecha: Also as mech. Means cool technology or mechanical items.

Otaku: Japanese equivalent of "fan boy". Someone who's obsessed with an anime series.

Ronin: Soldiers who are free of a master of leader. Sempai: Anyone who is master or senior in any type of organisation. - Tonight Reporter
