Made 2 Move 2 is the title of popular contemporary dance teacher Brigitte Reeve's new show opening at the Baxter theatre on Wednesday.
Described as a "sheer dance pleasure and technical splendour" Made 2 Move 2 features dancers aged between 10 and 28 and includes guest artistes Adrian Bennett, Theo Ndindwa and Tanya Arshamian.
Bennet, 16, is a promising dancer from Gauteng who was spotted by Reeve while she was examining for the Association of International Dance Teachers.
"He's so talented I simply had to bring him down to showoff here." Reeve enthuses.
"Ndindwa is no newcomer to Cape Town. He'll be remembered for his years with Dance for All before travelling to London to study and dance with Phoenix Dance company. He's returned to reconnect with his family and join DFA's new Youth Company."
In Made 2 Move 2, Ndindwa and his partner Arshamian perform a pas de deux they choreographed.
Reeve - whose Pictures of People drew critical acclaim from the Daily Dispatch, which described it as "the dance highlight of the (Grahamstown) fringe festival" - is excited about her latest production, saying that it's devoid of angst.
"Much too much emphasis is being laid on introspective and negative emotions. Made 2 Move 2 joyously celebrates the magical side of dance."
The production also marks Reeve's silver jubilee as a teacher and her move from her Plumstead studio to teaching at UCT's School of Ballet.
Having studied the Fosse style in New York with Ann Reinking (of Chicago - The Musical fame), Reeve has adopted this technique for her glitzy bowler hat and glove number titled A La Fosse.
In her lyrical piece The Gift of Love she has selected musical favourites such as Queen's I Was Born to Love You and Marilyn Monroe's I Wanna be Loved by You with Bennett's solo appearance taken to When You Say You Love Me.
Reeve again taps into Queen for her strong jazzy piece Living Under Pressure, to capture reactions to daily noises and living situations. Ndindwa and Arshamian's pas de deux is set to the funky and vibrant Pictures of People.
Noted for energy, polish and high technical standards, a Brigitte Reeve presentation always is a focal point in Cape Town' s dance calendar.
