Collecting is a unique human phenomenon often referred to as an “investment addiction”. Once bitten by the collecting bug, individuals become life-long collectors, captivated by their particular field of collecting.

Celebrating its 15th year, the National Antiques & Decorative Arts Faire takes place in Exhibition 1 of the Sandton Convention Centre from Friday to Sunday, from 10am to 6pm daily. It’s the place to find that statement piece for your home, that rare piece to add to your collection or just something special that catches your eye.

The Gala Cocktail Opening Night of the National Antiques Faire takes place on Thursday from 7pm. It attracts the who’s who of the collecting world, top business people, the elite and celebrities who gather to be the first to reserve the best pieces. The faire is linking in with 67 Blankets for Mandela and will showcase their top “designer” blankets which form part of a “Dutch auction” to raise funds to buy supplies to knit even more blankets for this worthy cause.

The fair offers the best of yesterday and today, all under one roof, beautifully styled and exquisitely presented, including:

l A visual banquet of decor settings – from dining areas featuring 24-seater antique tables laden with collectable porcelain dinner sets and silver dining accessories to seating areas with armoires, master art and book-shelves filled with collectable books and ornaments that will intrigue collectors.

l The SA Mint, whose Johannesburg Coin Fair puts the focus on collecting rare numismatics, bank notes and Kruger Rands.

l For art aficionados many antique dealers pick up significant South African Masters art pieces in their dealings with collectors including works by JH Pierneef, Irma Stern, Robert Hodgins, Edoardo Villa, Gregoire Boonzaier, Adriaan Boshoff, Sydney Goldblatt and Cecil Skotnes, as well as contemporary master art. The Charles Greig gallery will showcase their range of bronzes and Ardmore ceramics.

l US ceramics dealer Ed Pascoe of Pascoe Ceramics puts the focus on the 200th anniversary of the English house of Royal Doulton with some rare pieces on show. Dutch antiques dealer Ricus Dullaert of Kunsthandel HWC Dullaert showcases European and Chinese antiques never seen before and specialises in finding antique pieces that have strong ties to the Dutch/South African heritage.

From the UK, Books Illustrated, specialists in limited edition books and original art from the Golden Age of Illustration, will launch their limited edition Jungle Book to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Rudyard Kipling, with illustrations by South African Lute Vink.

l Classic cars feature with two collectable 1950s favourites on show.

l A valuations service by some of South Africa’s top appraisers will be available.

l R100 at www.naada.co.za or the door. Opening night event: R250 (with wine and snacks). Info: Clyde Terry at 011 482 3266 or [email protected].
