Celebrating African diversity and victory, the 14th African Renaissance Festival is marking Africa Day this Friday at the Durban International Convention Centre.

A music concert will take place featuring top artists such as Zakes Bantwini, Lira, Thokozani Langa and DJ Sgqemeza of Ukhozi FM.

Durban-based Bantwini shared his insight on Africa Day and what it means to him: “I think it should be Africa Day every day.

“For instance, Women’s Day shouldn’t just be celebrated on one particular day of the year, but it should be remembered and appreciated on a daily basis.

“Sometimes we lack patriotism. Europeans want to be American. They want to go to the States to realise their dream when they can do that in their own backyard.

“We shouldn’t just forget about Africa and our roots. Perhaps we should find a way of sustaining Africa Day and keep it alive every day.”

Bantwini said he felt great when he heard he was going to be one of the acts at the concert.

“So many artists could’ve represented it, so I am honoured to have been chosen as one of the acts.

“I would some day like to be seen as an ambassador for the African man, to represent our nation and show how proud we are to be Africans,” he said.

* The Africa Day concert takes place on Friday at the Durban ICC Arena at 6.30pm. Tickets are selling at R80 and are available through Computicket.
