Los Angeles-based Indian-American comedy star Rajiv Satyal is set to have Durban audiences in stitches when he performs for the very first time in South Africa this July.
Satyal a prominent figure on the US comedy circuit who performs alongside the likes of Russell Peters and Dave Chappelle, will perform for one night only in the “I am Indian Comedy Show” which takes place on July 20 (Friday) at the Cuba Lounge Events Venue at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Satyal’s TV-clean act has made him one of the most versatile comedians working today. Rajiv had an unusual entry into standup, doing his act for then-World No. 1 tennis player Pete Sampras in a locker room.
He has some interesting claims to fame: he opened for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in front of 17,000 people. He made the massively viral I am Indian video, which has been seen over 50 million times, shared by Bollywood stars, and used to introduce the Indian Prime Minister in Shanghai and Dubai. He has opened for Russell Peters more than any other Indian comedian.
And has opened for Dave Chappelle five times, and even opened Chappelle’s very first show after his much-publicized African hiatus.
Satyal performs weekly at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood. He has 12 videos with over 100,000 YouTube views each, and been featured on/in NBC, NPR, Nickelodeon, Fx, Netflix, Bob & Tom, Times Now, Zee TV, Pandora, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Variety, Advertising Age, The Times of India, The Huffington Post, and The LA Times.
“I am super excited to perform in South Africa and more so in Durban, a place I’ve wanted to visit for a long time, particularly because of its connection to Indians and Indian culture. I am sure I will have a great time performing for Durbanites” says Satyal.
“I Am Indian” also features local star Masood Boomgaard who has recently enjoyed success in Dubai, Australia and the UK where her performed on the London West End.
The show takes place on July 20 at 8pm at Cuba Lounge Moses Mabhida.
