GIG OF THE WEEK

Madala Kunene

Centre for Jazz & Popular Music, UKZN (Wednesday)

His music is traditional with a hint of the blues. He is known to many as the king of the Zulu guitar, but Madala Kunene is more than that.

Born in Cato Manor, Kunene has worked with the late Sipho Gumede, Mandla Masuka, Busi Mhlongo and Moses Molelekwa, to name a few. He is also known for his successful act with the late Syd Kitchen.

“When I take to the stage, I bring magic moments through my guitar. People love what I do and they appreciate my work,” said Kunene.

The musician is set to finger those strings at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at UKZN on Wednesday.

At the show he will play some of his well-known songs such as Abangoma and Celebrate together with new material that he is working on.

As he describes his music as the “Madala-line”, Kunene is in the studio cooking up a new album which fans can expect to see on shelves next month. The album will highlight and cele-|brate the history of Mkhumbane (the African name for Cato Manor).

His release will feature a few collaborations with seasoned musicians, as well as be a showcase for some young musicians from his mentorship programme.

Kunene will perform in a trio featuring himself on vocals and the guitar, Vishen Kemraj on the tabla and Mduduzi Magwaza on the flute.

The show starts at 6pm. Tickets cost R30, pensioners pay R20 and students pay R10.

Call 031 260 3385 for more info.
