Back at The Lab...

It's got bling. It's got business deals. It's got BEE. Could you get more topical than that in South Africa where the spotlight has fallen on new black entrepreneurs?

And now a new drama series, The Lab, will dish the dirt on all the wheeling and dealing behind the scenes at a fast-paced investment bank.

The series follows the lives of six main characters at Luzipho, Atkins and Bhengu Merchant Bank (the title is derived from an acronym of the bank's names).

On the set the excitement was palpable. It was the final day of the shoot so the cast's anxiety to wrap up was obvious. But for an outsider so was the gloss that will set this drama series apart.

It is going to be fancy, classy and aimed at matching international standards. Think 24 meets West Wing.

When Tonight went on set it was late afternoon and the assistant director, Phillip Mosoeu, kept screaming: "Come on guys we're losing light, we're losing light", as he tried to use the last moments of twilight to film a scene.

It was a night shoot that we were invited to. Call time for the crew was 4pm and they were going to shoot till 4am the next morning.

It was a scene where the characters, played by Mothusi Magano and Mbali Ntuli, are starting to fall in love. He was dressed in a black striped suit with pink shirt. Very classy. Very hip. So, in addition to the story, viewers will be able to see the best in fashion.

The crew had been shooting since January and six months later they were finishing off - the long duration ensuring high standards were met.

The show has been in development for three years. Curious Pictures, the folk who brought you Hard Copy, Tobias's Bodies, Soul City, Tsha Tsha and L'atitude, were behind the production.

Telling the story is an ensemble cast of some of SA's most talented actors. Nambitha Mpumlwana is Pearl Luzipho, the matriarch of the company and chairperson of the board. Mpumlwana's CV includes a role in the Oscar-winning movie Tsotsi and in television: Isidingo, Generations and 7de Laan. She has also worked as a presenter on Lebone.

Veteran of stage, screen and television, Graham Hopkins plays the CEO, Monty Atkins, a complex and flawed character. Hopkins is best known for his work in the 1990 production of My Fair Lady and Scenes from an Execution.

His film roles include Heel Against The Head, Stander, Gums and Roses and he appeared in several TV shows, most notably Hard Copy and Barney Barnato.

Fana Mokoena is "Jaws" Bhengu, head of the equity fund, rainmaker and trend-setter. Most television viewers will remember Mokoena for his role in Generations as Mandla.

Mothusi Magano is the wunderkind Charles "Mingus" Khathi - schooled in the US and the UK, and torn between his many universes. Magano has acted in theatre, television and film, with roles in Tsotsi, Gums and Roses and Hotel Rwanda.

Catriona Andrew plays Nadine Shakanovsky, the legal advisor to the firm. Many TV viewers will remember Catriona as Jane Edwards on Egoli and later a pole-dancing stripper in Snitch. She was more recently in Mtunzini.com.

Dada Koyana is Vuvu Sibiya, the company's PR director. An actress who knows her soap, she appeared on Backstage, Generations and Isidingo and worked on the movies God is African and Drum.

These six leads are supported by literally dozens of other accomplished actors in The Lab. Watch out for it on SABC3 on Tuesday, June 27.
