WHAT is hoped will become a major music festival in the Midlands starts this week and boasts a line-up of some of the finest musicians KZN has to offer.

The Michaelhouse Music Festival runs from Friday to Sunday and celebrates Heritage weekend with the likes of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, Platform Jazz and Nibs van der Spuy and many more. Director of Marketing at Michaelhouse, Murray Witherspoon, said the event has been a year in the making.

“The objective is to make a quality line-up of world-class musical entertainment more accessible to the area, and perhaps even to combine the appeal of various genres and performers to attract music lovers from outside of the province to the event. It is anticipated that the line-up and format of the event will be expanded each year for the foreseeable future.”

He explained that with access to a wide range of performance venues at Michaelhouse, this lends itself perfectly to expanding both the format and range of genres.

“Entertainers were selected based primarily on the widest possible appeal to the immediate audience in year one.”

Michealhouse has roped in 500 world-class performers to entertain audiences of all tastes with seven acts over three days. Veteran conductor, Richard Cock, is the creative director of the event.

A press release said the musical programme will start in the school’s Schlesinger theatre on Friday and whisk music lovers through a range of genres including performances by Gareth Gale, Ildo Nanja, well- known concert pianist Christopher Duigan, virtuoso violinist Joanna Frankel, Sue Cock and Brothers in Arms, the massed choirs of Michaelhouse, Kearsney College, the KZN Midlands Youth Choir, the Clifton Nottingham Road Prep Senior Primary Choir and the Chanticleer Singers.

The festival will end at 7pm on Sunday with a performance by the Chanticleer Singers, under the baton of Cock, in the Michaelhouse Chapel.
