Durban - Music and motivation are what drive Newlands East gospel singer Jeremiah Fynn, whose single Who’s That has been nominated for a Mpumakoloni International Gospel Award.

The awards, which take place on Saturday in Port Elizabeth, honour gospel musicians across the continent, and Fynn has been nominated as best newcomer.

“I am very honoured to represent my community of Newlands East at the awards. It is also a huge event for me because I have been nominated alongside other artists who are more established and who I look up to when it comes to gospel music,” he said.

Who’s That is Fynn's attempt to inspire young people to stay away from drugs and crime.

“I feel that music draws people in, and it’s everywhere, at parties, events or get-togethers. If we can play music that encourages people, then that will go a long way in building our youth,” said the 36-year-old artisan welder.

The track is an update of a song he released in 2002.

“People saw that I rap well and I used to be a big fan of TRO back in the day. I realised I could pursue singing as it’s what I’m passionate about, and that’s how it all started. I am hoping that the nomination is my big break into this career.”
