Sometimes one gets a yen for a good burger and this pub in Glenwood seemed a good bet. This used to be the venue of a favourite restaurant of ours, Hemingways, now long gone.

We had the choice of sitting out on the balcony, with the smokers, or sitting inside. We chose to sit away from the blaring speaker, choosing two bar stools and a barrel table.

Our waitron was friendly and bubbly and soon we had a lime and soda (R20) and a Hansa draught 500m (R27).

For starters, we chose the chicken nachos (R61). This turned out to be a meal in itself, consisting of nachos, chicken, cheddar cheese, salsa and guacamole, served with sour cream. It was a good choice, with the flavours combining well.

While we were munching away we were watching a young couple play pool, virtually within arm’s reach. They were really competitive and evenly matched.

The other entertainment in the place was diners taking turns to belt out karaoke songs to those sitting on the balcony. All the usual favourites were getting an airing.

Next we had to choose our burgers. My wife went for the Cock-U-Doodle-Doo crumbed chicken-breast burger and chips (R76). The burgers are served on a sour-dough bun.

Mine was the Glenn’s burger – two 200g beef patties, bacon, cheese and avocado.

The burgers were pleasant and filling, but we could have just done with the nachos.

The beef patties were juicy and the rest of the ingredients all played their role.

The accompanying chips were also enjoyable.

After eating a bit of our burgers we called a halt and asked for takeaway containers. I had most of my burger for lunch the next day.

It was relaxing hanging out in the pub and Davenport Road was a fun place to be. Being just after payday, lots of people were enjoying themselves in the pubs and restaurants that line the road.

There is only so much karaoke one can handle and my wife was being a bit unkind about the singing, which she said was poor. I couldn’t tell as my singing brings tears to the eyes of my family. It was time to head home.
