Durban - In a world of smartphones and smart apps, the TOPS at SPAR Bierfest, presented by The Independent on Saturday, has made a smart move and introduced #DrinkSmart.

It’s a proactive responsible drinking programme, presented by Jiguja, that aims to see everyone having a good time at the festival and getting home safely afterwards.

There’s nothing smart about drinking and driving, but with #Drink

Smart, revellers can enjoy everything the festival has to offer, right down to that obligatory “one for the road”, thanks to several reliable, safe transport options.

The festival has once again partnered with Good Fellas, South Africa’s premier chauffeur drive service; Taxify, the smartphone app that connects passengers to drivers; and DRYVER, the free social network app that helps people find designated drivers within their circle of friends.

The latter, a mobile app introduced by TOPS at SPAR and based around cultivating a mindset of responsible drinking among social adults, is a first for South Africa.

“Research has shown that alcohol consumers are looking for an affordable and safe alternative to public transport. Using the free DRYVER app, a user can locate his or her friends, find out who is staying sober, and then openly request a safe lift home. We know the effects of drinking and driving, and want to give our customers a solution while making them aware that they have a choice to be responsible,” said group liquor manager Mark Robinson.

To access DRYVER, users simply download the app and create a network of friends from the existing contacts on their phone.

Specifically designed for party people, the app is easy to use and “tipsy friendly”. DRYVER is available for free for Apple, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobiles from www.dryver.mobi.

Good Fellas, South Africa’s leading and most established take-me-home service, provides chauffeurs for members and non-members who are looking to take the smart way home.

This year, not only can festival goers book their ride with Good Fellas, but they also stand a chance to win a one-year Smart 90 membership. For more information keep an eye out on the Bierfest Facebook page.

To spread the festival love, Good Fells is also offering a free service whereby its chauffeurs will drive festival goers home, in their own cars, after the event. This service is available to members and non-members on a first come, first served basis.

Finally, revellers wanting to use a taxi service have access to Taxify, the on-demand service that connects riders with the best local drivers at the most reasonable  prices, all at the tap of a button.

All new users signing up for the smartphone app at this year’s festival qualify for a free journey up to the value of R150. To claim their free ride, users simply need to use the promo code BIERFEST2017 when booking their ride. Taxify is available for free for iPhone, Android and Blackberry 7.
