Durban - This week’s picture of old Durban comes from a postcard sent to us by Margery Vice and takes in Durban’s harbour from the Embankment. The photograph was probably taken in the 1960s.

Our photographer Shelley Kjonstad couldn’t get into any of the blocks of flats that line Margaret Mncadi Avenue because of Covid-19.

Instead, we approached journalist colleague Nabeelah Shaikh, who shot the new photograph from her window. It shows a very much developed harbour in the last 60years.

Further plans include the R200 million renovation of the passenger cruise ship terminal N Shed, seen at the far right of the new picture, to cater for 50 000 passengers annually once cruise liner operations come back online after the national lockdown.

“This multi-user terminal will make Durban an even more desirable destination for cruise ships from all over the world,” said Ross Volk, MD for MSC Cruises South Africa.

The Independent on Saturday appeals to readers who have old pictures of Durban and other parts of the province to send them to us for consideration.

If any readers are featured in the old picture, we will do our best to recreate the scene with them in it again. Readers sending pictures digitally - images should be about 1MB - can address them, with the relevant information, to [email protected].

If the pictures are in hard-copy format, they can be posted to The Editor, Old Pictures, The Independent on Saturday, PO Box 47549, Greyville, 4023.
