The picture on the right shows uMhlanga main beach with the lighthouse in the background.
The picture on the left shows Lighthouse Beach from the lighthouse itself, with the Oyster Box Hotel clearly in the foreground. The pictures must have been taken in the late 1950s.
The lighthouse was completed in 1954 in four days and 19 hours and stands 21m above the beach with 95 steps to the top. Its construction cost R23838.
The pictures taken in early August by our photographer Doctor Ngcobo show a very different uMhlanga, with the Pearls and Cabanas dominating the skyline on the main beach.
The pink building in the far distance is the Beverly Hills Hotel that opened in December 1964. The impressive series of developments along Marine Drive can also be seen in the skyline of Lighthouse Beach. Unable to access the lighthouse itself, we shot the picture from the promenade.
