Driver jumps from moving truck as cab catches fire

Pietermaritzburg - A man was seriously injured this morning when he jumped from his moving truck on the N3 near the Peter Brown offramp on Town Hill.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived to find a large truck lying on its side in the central median. A small fire had broken out in the cab of the truck.

Two paramedics began to contain the fire, using fire extinguishers, while another paramedic made his way to the patient further up the road. The  man had sustained numerous injuries, leaving him in a serious condition. It is believed he had jumped from his moving truck to escape the fire, causing the truck to overturn.

Paramedics treated the man and provided him with pain-relief medication before he was transported him to Edendale Hospital for further care.

Local authorities are  investigating. 

In a separate incident twelve people were injured after a horrific taxi crash on the M1 Higginson Highway over the N2 freeway just before 10am this morning.

Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said paramedics found a taxi and a car had collided before the taxi overturned coming to rest on its side. Three people were trapped in the taxi and together with Fire Department were stabilised before they were carefully extricated from the wreckage. Multiple ambulances were used to transport the injured to hospital.

At this stage the cause of the collision is unknown however SAPS are investigating.
