Durban ‒ A fiery smash this evening on the N3 South Bound, near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza in Shongweni, Durban, had services responding en masse.

Shawn Herbst of Netcare 911 Media said: “At 6.30pm on Friday, Netcare 911 responded to a collision on the N3. Reports indicate that multiple trucks, cars and a tanker have been involved in a collision and have all caught alight.

“Medics have assessed multiple patients who have all sustained moderate to serious injuries,” said Herbst.

“As the fire rages on, it has not been determined how many people are still unaccounted for.”

Herbst reported that the SAPS Search and Rescue, Durban Metropolitan Search and Rescue, SAPS, eThekwini Fire and Rescue, Road Traffic Inspectorate as well as many private and government ambulance services were at the scene.

“The eThekweni Fire and Rescue Services have multiple units on scene and are working on dousing the flames,” he said.

He reported that Netcare 911 had activated a helicopter air ambulance to the scene to airlift one of the seriously injured patients.

He said the scene was still active and details were subject to change as more information became available.

The freeway was closed in both directions last night.
