Durban - A 16-year-old girl appeared in the uMzumbe magistrate’s court on Tuesday after being arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a three-month-old baby.

The teen was a suspect in the kidnapping after the arrest of her 21-year-old boyfriend on Thursday following a tip off to police.

The couple who are due back in court next Monday were alleged to have kidnapped the boy from his mother’s arms while she had been sleeping.

According to the boy's mother, also 21, the older suspect is her cousin. She alleged that her cousin and his girlfriend came to visit the family in Mtwalume from uMlazi and they stayed for two weeks and left on June 2 with the infant.

Speaking to the Independent On Saturday the mother said she and her son were discharged from the GJ Crooks Hospital in Scottburgh on Monday.

“I’m doing okay, my son is healthy and okay. I hope that those two stay in prison for a long time,” she said.

The boy's mother was hospitalised on June 25 due to stress following her child's kidnapping. She said last Thursday she was pleasantly surprised when doctors came into her ward to tell her that her son had been found and was in the children's ward.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the 16-year-old was arrested in Lamontville where the infant was found. She was released into the custody of her parents after her court appearance.

“The 21-year-old man made his second court appearance yesterday and his case was remanded to July 16 for a bail application,” Zwane said.
