DURBAN - POLICE arrested a 45-year-old man on Wednesday in connection with a sexual assault on a 7-year-old girl, as he walked out of the door of a magistrate’s court in Pinetown.

He had just been in the dock for allegedly assaulting the child’s grandmother.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said that over the festive season the child had been snatched at a sports ground and taken to a restroom after having left the care of her grandmother to buy snacks at a tuck shop.

The man allegedly slapped the child across the face and touched her private parts, Gwala said. “Her granny became worried that she had not returned from the shop and went looking for her and found her with the suspect in the restroom,” said Gwala.

“She confronted the man and he also beat her.”

According to the charge sheet, the assault involved “strangling her, kicking her and punching her with a clenched fist”.

He had been out on bail of R500 for the assault charge but now remains in custody, ahead of his next court appearance on March 19.
