Durban - Today is an important day for civil society – it is World NGO Day, celebrated in more than 89 countries across six continents. It is a reminder that, when people collaborate with common goals and a common agenda, they can make a difference. Community efforts during the Covid pandemic have shown how vital their contributions are. Celebrate the contribution and achievements of NGOs across the world by getting involved, and participating in and supporting organisations at the forefront of social movements and real change.

NGOs celebrating in Durban today include:

  • Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education which provides teacher training for mathematics and science educators, working in under-resourced and rural schools
  • The Denis Hurley Centre which works with people of all faiths to serve the city’s poor and marginalised – homeless, urban unemployed and refugees – through clinic, feeding scheme, empowerment projects and pastoral outreach
  • The Napier Centre 4 Healing, an after-care facility for post-rehab addiction residents, offering an holistic approach to healing, situated near Verulam.
  • The German-funded STEAM Foundation which provides open education resources and materials development for science subjects in under-resourced and rural schools
  • St John Ambulance and Eye Care, which provides professional and affordable eye testing and eye care. St John South Africa also offers first aid and lifesaving skills training, ambulance services and medical supplies
  • Zoë-Life, a capacity-building and development organisation working in the field of public health and social transformation.
