Durban - A 35-year-old man is in a critical condition after a large tree fell on him in Sarnia near Pinetown on Thursday afternoon.

ER24 spokesperson Annine Siddall said that at about 4.30pm paramedics arrived after fire and rescue personnel managed to get the man out from under the tree. It is believed that the man and a group of other workers were felling the tree when it fell on him. 

The man, who sustained injuries to his abdomen and back, was lying in a river stream surrounded by his colleagues when paramedics arrived. He was treated and transported to RK Khan Hospital for further medical care. 

Fourteen school pupils were injured when the taxi they were travelling in crashed into a tree.

Also on Thursday 14 school children were injured after the taxi they were travelling in collided with a car before veering off the road and hitting a tree. The accident took place at the intersection of Candella Road and Westmeath Avenue in Bonela Durban.

Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said at about 3pm paramedics arrived to find the badly damaged taxi against the tree. Fourteen school children had sustained various injuries and more ambulances were dispatched.

The events leading up to the collision are unknown.
