Durban - A man was killed and another is fighting for his life after a head on collision on the M25 KwaMashu Highway on Wednesday morning.
Crisis Medical said at about 7.30am its paramedics responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on the KwaMashu Highway near Inanda. A light delivery vehicle and a minibus taxi had collided head on. Paramedics described the scene as "absolute carnage".
The driver of the delivery vehicle, a man of about 40, was found dead in the crumpled remains of the vehicle. The minibus taxi driver, the only occupant of the vehicle at the time, was trapped in the wreckage, with life threatening injuries.
Paramedics from Crisis Medical, Rescue Care, KZN EMS and Netcare911, stabilised the man while rescue workers from the Ethekwini Fire and Rescue services cut the man free using the jaws-of-life.
An Air Mercy Services medical helicopter airlifted the patient to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, where a team of specialists awaited him.
At this stage the cause of the collision is unknown. Police are investigating.
