The Pietermaritzburg Children’s Choir perform at the 2017 Michaelhouse Festival.

Pietermaritzburg - The Pietermaritzburg Children's Choir will be hosting auditions for children between the ages of 9-16 years over the coming weeks

Auditions are at Epworth Preparatory School are being held today (Wednesday) and on September 19 and October 10 from 4.15pm to 5.15pm.

The Pietermaritzburg Children’s Choir is the premiere regional children’s choir with a history of singing excellence and leadership. Under the current of conductor, Simon Bester, with accompanist, Anne Duthie, the choir has continued to stand out. Its manifesto is simply a love of singing and children learn so much more than choral singing: they learn about friendship, self-discipline, commitment, responsibility and team work.

The choir was founded in 1988 by Henrietta Jacobsohn. Thereafter Rykie Boeke became the choir director and was awarded the Certificate of Commendation for her contribution to music by Nelson Mandela. It is a regional choir which draws its choir members from many different backgrounds from the greater Pietermaritzburg area.

The highlight for any choir is to perform for the public. In 2006, the choir went on tour of Germany, Czechoslovakia and Hungary and In 2014, participated in the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia, achieving three silver diplomas.

The choir practices once a week during the school term at Epworth from 5.15pm to 7.15pm. There is a compulsory annual camp each year and performances at a variety of functions.
