Durban - Hot off the heels of his international tour, popular comedian Carvin Goldstone steps off the stage and "in front" of the big screen.
In a new venture, he has teamed up with NuMetro Cinemas to bring live comedy to the movie theatre.
"The plan is to introduce live comedy at movie theatres around the country. The idea is to have regular comedy nights," said Goldstone.
Dubbed NuMetro Comedy Nights, the venture will see a host of one-man and one-woman shows, ensemble lineups, and themed stand-up comedy shows take place over the next year.
"There is a great demand for fresh, accessible standup comedy in South Africa. This ticks all the boxes in terms of bringing fresh talent and comedy content to a highly accessible stage," said Goldstone.
"Eventually we'd like to roll out the comedy in NuMetro cinemas across the country. This is a good test to see how the market responds to hosting stand up in a movie theater. We thought it was a great fit. Movie theatres have tiered seating, it's an intimate space and perfect for comedy. So we are really hoping the public jumps on this because it's going to be something new, something fresh and something for everyone to enjoy," he said.
Goldstone is one of the biggest names in South African comedy winning this year's Comics Choice Comedian of the Year award, which is considered the "Oscars" of SA comedy. Previous winners include Trevor Noah and Loyiso Gola.
Offering a taste of the funny to come in the 2019, Goldstone will perform a one man show taking in material from his tours around the world. NuMetro Comedy Nights stages take place at Cornubia on November 27 at 8pm; at Galleria on November 28 at 8pm; and at The Pavilion on November 29 at 8pm. Tickets are R120 via quicket.co.za, R150 at the door. Whatsapp 081 519 5399 for bookings/queries.The Independent on Saturday
