Durban - South African Twitter users got in on the action roundly condemning government corruption with the #VoetsekANC trending for most of Friday.

@donaldmohale posted a picture of Ramaphosa’s cabinet with the caption “A cabinet of thieves #VoetsekANC”, while political cartoonist and satirist @mynameisjerm posted a cartoon entitle “Fattening the curve”.

@VusiSambo went as far as calling the ANC secretary general Acehole Magashule for saying "Tell me of one leader of the ANC, who has not done business with government.”

@MassynJustin tweeted: “They could have made life better for all, but they decided to eat! Like pigs at the trough. #VoetsekANC,” while @SimonPGrindrod wrote: “Retweet it. Shout it from the hilltops. Speak it. Refuse to be taken for fools by a rotten Government who have stolen the peoples money - and sold the hopes & dreams of our nation down the river. May they all hang their heads in shame. #VoetsekANC.”

Founder and CEO of Bishop Molefe Foundation @Molefe_Andrew tweeted: “Very sad that today I have to say #VoetsekANC to the oldest liberation movement that has now become a house of corruption and moral decay.”

@RiddeledCorpse from Soweto wrote: “The ANC does not even know the laws of this country #VoetsekANC They tell us it's OK because someone else did it too. They are supposed to be better than the crooks, not use them as an excuse to become thieves themselves,” while Durban’s Jan Booysen remarked: “African National Corruption investigating African National Corruption? I don't think it would work.”

Independent on Saturday columnist William Saunderson meyer pointed out the discrepancies in the president’s statements. @TheJaundicedEye tweeted: “Ramaphosa 23/03: "The funds will be administered by a reputable team drawn from financial institutions, accounting and government. It will fully account for every cent..." Ramaphosa 06/08: "I have appointed a committee to deal with alleged corruption in procurement..."

Political commentator Max du Preez wrote: “Magashule condemning corruption is like the fox saying catching chickens is wrong.”

A sadder note was hit by @Maboshego2. “#VoetsekANC. Could anyone kindly assist with a food voucher. Hungry and unemployed. Lost my job during lockdown. Trying to hustle my way out but it is tough during this pandemic. Anything would be appreciated.”

And then there was one tweet that was not trying to be ironic, but is genuine. @tolatender wrote: “Win Tenders! Get new skills on how to do tenders and service government, Government Needs You, enrol in the 3-Day workshop “The Tender Master Class” *certified by government, book now.”
