Durban - IFP leader Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi “shows no signs of slowing down”, and his family have planned grand celebrations for his 90th birthday next month.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Buthelezi’s son, Prince Zuzifa, said the family wanted to celebrate the man they described as not just their father, but “an icon in the history and body politik of South Africa”. Buthelezi turns 90 on August 27.

“The cumulative experiences and importantly, the gift of longevity that he continues to enjoy is the very gift his family is grateful for, and seeks to celebrate and honour. For the family it is a time to reflect and thank God for his blessing,” said Zuzifa Buthelezi.

Although he was described as “quite embarrassed” by the planned celebrations and the “fuss” that was being made over him, Buthelezi is expected to welcome dignitaries from around the world, including possibly Prince Charles.

The events include a thanksgiving service at the Durban Exhibition Centre, umgidi WaseKhaya (home celebrations) at the Ulundi sports facility and an invitation-only gala dinner.

“Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi has carved an unmistakable footprint in the South African history and in particular, the Zulu people. The role he has played in the lived experiences of millions of South Africans is well documented. His legacy is unique,” said Zuzifa Buthelezi.

When asked if their father would take a break from work, Zuzifa Buthelezi said: “He shows no sign of slowing down. We have spoken about this many times, but in his book he has slowed down.”

Buthelezi said his father kept in good health, waking up at 4am each day and exercising on his home bicycle, a stepping machine, and yoga.

“He often puts us to shame, he is very conscious about the food he eats, and having light exercise, he truly is an inspiration,” said Buthelezi.
