Johannesburg - The Baloitsi Daycare Centre in Diepsloot, north of Joburg, has been renovated, thanks to the SA Post Office.
Defney Moshokoa started Baloitsi when she was unable to find employment. Her mother lent her money to put up a basic building with two classrooms. The Post Office has painted the walls, fixed the leaking roof, put up a new ceiling and installed a door for the toilet.
Once these faults were fixed, the daycare centre complied with requirements for a grant, making it possible to render a much better service to the children at a lower cost to parents.
The Post Office has always provided service to communities at grassroots level, said Post Office chief executive Mark Barnes.
“We have a history of supporting education through the delivery of school books,” he said.
The project is run in conjunction with the organisation Joint Aid Management South Africa, an NGO that feeds more than 90 000 preschool children in more than 2 000 centres countrywide.
Good nutrition and stimulation were essential to fully develop the potential of pre-school children, Barnes said.
