It’s often said that happiness is fleeting – but at least it comes frequently, researchers say.

They found that the typical Briton feels truly happy eight times a week.

Romantic evenings out were among the main causes of happiness, a survey revealed, with 60 percent of those polled claiming to be happy with their lives.

But it was cuddling with our other half on the sofa that topped the list of things that cause us joy.

The typical Briton rated themselves as seven out of ten when it came to overall happiness, according to the survey of 1 500 adults by Butterkist popcorn. More than eight in ten said they preferred their home comforts and would always choose a night in with loved ones over a raucous night out.

Author and researcher Andy Cope said: "These results are very telling – overall we Brits are fairly happy with life. However our happiness really peaks when we are spending quality time with those we love."

Family, friends, hobbies and interests were all among the things that put a smile on Britons’ faces – but only 16 percent of those polled said work made them happy.
