The Twankey Bar at the Taj in Cape Town has been awarded the coveted title of Best Hotel Cocktail Bar, along with the Social Media Award, at the prestigious Bartending Accolades and Recognition Awards.

The awards are testament both to The Twankey Bar’s unique ambience and its ingenuous array of cocktail concoctions.

The Twankey Bar is best described as quirky, and borrows from the smooth-sultry-cool of the speakeasy, with bold red booths and marble countertops evoking the feel of prohibition America.

Add to this the exotic history of the spice route and Twankey’s legendary bearded barman, AJ Snetler’s far-from-conventional mixology magic, and one begins to understand the special something that differentiates The Twankey Bar from other bars.

AJ loves shaking and stirring the perfect cocktail.

Multi-award-winning mixologist Snetler says: “The Twankey Bar is very much a Cape Town institute, from its location on the corner of Wale and Adderley Street, to its history as part of the Taj Hotel.

Our cocktails are influenced by the prohibition reliance on innovation and Japanese pride in technique. But most of all, by the history and vivacity of our city. Every cocktail tells a story about Cape Town.”

The bar’s concoctions are crafted using all manner of techniques – from wood-chip smoking to teapot brewing – and these exotic elixirs are well-documented on The Twankey Bar’s Instagram account and other channels, which earned the bar the Social Media Award.
