Cocktail: Lynchberg Sours

Price: R45

Ingredients: Jack Daniel’s, Triple Sec, lemon juice, Coca-Cola and lemonade.

Drinking whiskey out of a martini glass proved to be a bit of a classy experience.

Barman Downey Duncalo made the drink by shaking together a shot of Jack, a shot of Triple Sec and a shot of lemon juice and straining it into a martini glass over a dash of Coke. A dash of lemonade is added and the glass is garnished with a lime peel and rimmed with brown sugar.

The sugar rimming made for unique whiskey drinking. I caught the distinctive Jack Daniel’s aroma as I tasted the brown sugar.

The taste of Coke was a backdrop which didn’t overpower the drink.

It was not too icy either. General manager Claire Erasmus said the drink appeals to people who have a taste for sour cocktails.

The Sidewalk Cafe is a Madame Zingara restaurant perched on the slopes of Vredehoek.

It has a cosy, beach house atmosphere. The decor includes hanging dried flowers and kitchen utensils.

From its lofty height, you can take in sweeping views from Cape Town Stadium to the harbour.

It is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 10.30pm and Sundays from 9am to 2pm.

There is a two-for-one cocktail special from 3pm to 6pm Monday to Saturdays. – Weekend Argus
