London - If you tend to freeze when faced with a long wine list in a restaurant, you’re not alone – half of us always choose the second cheapest option on the menu, a survey has found.

Many of us feel out of our depth when picking wine, with 49 percent simply getting the second cheapest bottle.

One in five admitted they are intimidated by long wine lists. Young drinkers were the most confused about buying wine, with more than a quarter of 25 to 34-year-olds saying they don’t know where to start.

But we’re more comfortable about trying something new when shopping in a supermarket, the survey of 2 000 adults by Asda found. A third said this is because they don’t have to worry about how to pronounce a label and 41 percent said bottles tend to be less expensive.

Not knowing which wine to choose for dinner party guests (18 percent) topped the list of biggest wine worries.

Other feared faux pas include being scared of spilling wine down yourself (16 percent) and knocking your glass off the table (15 percent).

Philippa Carr, Asda’s master of wine, said: “The world of wine is vast and exciting with many different grape varieties so it can be confusing.

“Our research has shown customers enjoy experimenting with wine, but don’t know where to start and what wine to choose.”
