On Friday the news broke that renowned celebrity chef, author and travel TV personality had died.

Celebrities, musicians and even former US President Barack Obama has paid tribute to Bourdain.

Local chefs and foodies also shared their sympathies on social media, as well as messages about how he inspired them in their kitchens and in their daily lives.

Chef Bourdain was busy filming his latest series with CNN when he reportedly took his own life. The talented chef did visit SA five years ago to film food inserts and thoroughly enjoyed what he was served.

In 2013 for his series Parts Unknown, Chef Bourdain travelled to SA and enjoyed the food in Yeoville, Johannesburg

It was in the veld in SA, after a braai that Bourdain said: "Meat on the plate, blood on my pants — life is good."

CNN said in a statement that Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his CNN series, "Parts Unknown." 

French chef and close friend Eric Ripert fouond Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room on Friday morning after he had taken his own life.

Ripert tweeted: "Anthony was my best friend...An exceptional human being, so inspiring & generous. One of the great storytellers who connected w so many. I pray he is at peace from the bottom of my heart. My love and prayers are also w his family, friends and loved ones."
